The Library of Congress(LOC) contains millions of books, photographs, papers, maps, films, sundry printed materials and recordings. The digital collection covers a large portion of these. The digital collection is predominantly in the public domain or no known copyright restrictions, items the LOC has permissions for or those with special access. The rights category that each image falls into is clearly listed in the item information and metadata.

The Prelinger Archive offers video collected from a variety of sources. The Prelinger Archive notes that its focus in recent years has been home movies, however it also has an extensive archive of industrial, educational and advertising videos and tapes. They are available under creative commons and the public domain, with the exception of reproduction of stock footage, handled through Getty Images. The descriptions are under copyright by the Prelinger Archive. The films that are covered under the public domain and creative commons are clearly marked as such, although some will require extra research to determine permissions for use.

The Getty provides digitized images that they believe to be in the public domain, with open content as a filter option in the search engine. While may of the works on the Getty’s website are under copyright, those that are not are clearly marked as such. Within each image, whether it is sculpture, a photograph, painting or page from a book, it is noted whether it is in the public domain.
