Guide to Digitization

In Art History, many years ago, I was shown Dali’s Persistence of Memory. It covered the screen in the auditorium, and I have seen it on posters and t-shirts for years since.  It was the ‘80s, so the image was a projection of a slide from a photograph, but one elements applies to thinking about digitization.  The painting, it turns out, is not a large grandiose work. At the Museum of Modern Art in New York, a viewer will discover Dali’s work is 9.5 inches by 13 inches, making it only a little larger than a sheet of paper.

The virtual and reality of the Dali painting demonstrates some of the thought processes required when determining what to digitize and how.   Digitization allows the painting to be seen and studied regardless of location, but it both enhances (allows closer looks at the elements of the piece) and detracts (distorts the size and detail of the physical work) from the object itself.  Digitizing an object is a balance between which properties are transmittable and which are not.   Scale and texture are harder to capture digitally. Most of all, context and bias are impossible to capture. When culturally sensitive objects are being considered for digitization, the potential harm and the bias of the organization digitizing the object have to be weighed against the value of digitizing an object and the purpose of making a digital image.

Conway’s discussion of manipulation of images for different effects was an interesting discussion of the value of an exact copy and what can be done to make a digital image either more useful or more faithful to the original creator.  For example, the tone adjustment case he used allowed the viewer to see into the home and understand more about the family and its living conditions than the original print.

Video and 3D imaging allows digitization with more perspective. Combining 3D imaging with 3D printing, museums can offer visitors with sensory or vision issues and option to have 3D models of objects to touch and understanding.

The ability to digitize objects allows a wider variety of uses than an object solely in situ. It has the potential to widen the reach of an object, as well as manipulation to develop a better understanding of the object its place in time and space.

The Library of Congress(LOC) contains millions of books, photographs, papers, maps, films, sundry printed materials and recordings. The digital collection covers a large portion of these. The digital collection is predominantly in the public domain or no known copyright restrictions, items the LOC has permissions for or those with special access. The rights category that each image falls into is clearly listed in the item information and metadata.

The National Archives of the Netherlands offers CC0 images of documents, photographs, maps and public records. The collection includes extensive World War 2 (experienced as an occupied country) records, as well as those dealing with the aftermath. The archive also boasts an extensive stamp collection. Part of the archives site is dedicated to the international archival networks it is partnered with to ensure its citizens have the ability to access information.

The Library Company of Philadelphia – America’s oldest cultural institution, founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1731.

The Library Company of Philadelphia offers open access to digitized images of selections from the collections. Digitized artifacts include books, paintings, prints, posters, databases, photographs and more. The collection’s date from the early 18th century to contemporary times. The images are open access and free for use, with the citation information on the linked page above as well as links provided in the image metadata.

Prelinger Archives

The Prelinger Archive offers video collected from a variety of sources. The Prelinger Archive notes that its focus in recent years has been home movies, however it also has an extensive archive of industrial, educational and advertising videos and tapes. They are available under creative commons and the public domain, with the exception of reproduction of stock footage, handled through Getty Images. The descriptions are under copyright by the Prelinger Archive. The films that are covered under the public domain and creative commons are clearly marked as such, although some will require extra research to determine permissions for use.

NASA on the commons makes digital images available to the public spanning its history. They are using the Flikr platform, which is not entirely part of creative commons as Flikr users can put restrictions on their own work. The NASA images on the NASA page on Flickr are all noted as having no known copyright restrictions. The images include astronauts, craft, test sites, training, views from satellites and pictures from unmanned exploratory spacecraft. NASA does have caveats for comments, restricting use of URLs in comments to ensure there is no perception of commercial use.

The Getty provides digitized images that they believe to be in the public domain, with open content as a filter option in the search engine. While may of the works on the Getty’s website are under copyright, those that are not are clearly marked as such. Within each image, whether it is sculpture, a photograph, painting or page from a book, it is noted whether it is in the public domain.

A Definition of Digital Humanities

Digital humanities is a discipline that combines uses ever evolving technologies to enhance the myriad activities that make up the field of humanities. Evolving from advances in computing, digital humanities offer tools and platforms for activities from research to data analysis to presentation, curation, education and public engagements.

The reading selections made it clear that a coherent definition continues to elude us all. The ideas of digital, computing and technology are a constant, however each one bounded the ideas and how they could be used differently. While some writers embraced the digital, as opposed to the computing, others seemed to want the term limited to data analysis.

I left my definition broad, as the readings exercise convinced me that as a community we need to embrace and respect all the ways the digital world can be used in the humanities and all of the professions within the humanities that can practice digital humanities. Looking at the history and development of computing humanities and the name shift to digital humanities, imagining how ideas can be studied and presented differently needs to be open-ended to reflect the continuing changes in technology and applications.
